Two UK Charities First to Benefit from Dell YouthConnect Grant

Dell YouthConnect, a global programme designed to support education and digital inclusion initiatives for underserved youth was launched in the UK today. The US$694,000 cash and in-kind grants of Dell products were awarded to the Center for Digital Inclusion (CDI) and Action for Children. The grants will be used to improve access to technology in the UK and help young people develop the transferable skills needed to enhance lives and pursue professional careers.

The Dell YouthConnect programme was launched in February 2009 and by the end of the year, Dell will have donated more than US$8 million to educational and digital initiatives that will impact more than 100,000 young people in eight countries. The cash and in-kind grants support technology education for young people, and promote maths, science and technology skills development. Dell assesses technology and infrastructure needs together with the recipient organisations, and awards strategic partnerships and employee-directed grants to meet their specific needs.

Rodrigo Baggio, CDI founder, is in London today and will be talking at the Ashoka Foundation about further expansion and the increasing focus on a social enterprise model.

On the 16th of November, the World Wide Web Foundation launched its global operations at the Internet Governance Forum in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt (full press release  and more information, please, click here). Founded by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, the foundation seeks to advance the use of the web for social impact. Together with its official launch came the news of two key strategic partnerships, one of which will be with CDI.

3rd day of CDI’s Annual Meeting in Rio de Janeiro

Mauricio Davila, CDI Global Director for International and Institutional development, shared with our network, CDI’s main achievements during 2009 and the plans for 2010. The partnership with Dell in Brazil and Mexico, the expansion plans to the UK and Middle East were some of the topics presented on the 3rd day of CDI’s Annual Meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

The pilots in the UK caused excitement and showed where CDI network will be heading to in a couple of years: mobile technology. More on that click here.

Michael Dell visits CDI’s schools in Brazil

Michael Dell visited this week a CDI school in Hortolandia, São Paulo. The school is part of the initiative which is benefiting more than 1,100 young Brazilians up to 17 years. The program is called Dell Youth Connect  and is sponsoring the nine schools that comprise the Brazilian CDI network: three in Campinas, three in the capital Sao Paulo and three in Porto Alegre. The company also is donating about 55 computers to the first super community center in Rio de Janeiro, scheduled to open on the 17th of Novembrer.

The partnership between Dell and CDI was also launched in Mexico where 12 CDI’s schools benefited with new equipment. Today Dell is CDI´s main sponsor globally and will be also supporting CDI Pilot Programme in the UK.

11th CDI Annual Meeting – 2nd day

P1030650 The second day of CDI network 11th Annual Meting started with an inspirational presentation by Hans Donner, the most important Brazilian graphic designer. Hans Donner traveled to Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro, to share with us his experience in trying to reach the perfect combination between technology and humanity. This is what CDI has been doing for the past 14 years.

During the second part of the morning, educators and monitors shared their experience in training and monitoring. They have also talked about the innovations added to CDI classic methodology, such as the use of social medial as twitter and of text messages. The results are promising and show that CDI 14 methodology of community empowerment is entering the new millennium.

CDI 11th Annual Meeting

encontroredeCDI is now  hosting its 11th Annual Meeting in Nova Friburgo/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

More than 160 participants are already present at the event: students, educators, CDI’s directors and board members from 12 different countries will be sharing their experiences, good practices and current challenges during this five days meeting. It’s the most exciting moment of the year for the CDI network!

Some very important topics will be discussed during this week: social networks, social entrepreneurship and CDI Community model.

There will be also a fantastic video competition amongst CDI’s students who will be sharing the work they have done during CDI courses.
